We’re excited to start on site with our showroom project in Acton, as strip out commences alongside off site joinery fabrication.

The refined material palette brings together birch ply wall panelling, display shelving and box plinths, light oak chairs, moss green upholstery and bespoke cushions, with an off white voile curtain wall softening the space.

This warm, natural palette is designed to create a calm and understated backdrop for the products on display.

Front and rear views of our developed concept design for a full loft, side and rear extension to a 1970s chalet-style semi-detached bungalow in Theydon Bois, now moving forward towards planning.

The front roof extension is the principal architectural move. In planning terms, twin pitched dormers offer a more appropriate response to the front elevation than a broad box dormer, reducing perceived mass and sitting more comfortably within the existing roofscape. Here, that approach is developed into a connected form, providing the loft with the head height and usable floor area of a wider dormer, while allowing the elevation to read as two smaller, articulated pitched volumes.

The dormer proportions are informed by the existing garage gable below, with natural silvered timber cladding used to continue and strengthen the established architectural language of the house.

At ground floor level, a compact side extension creates a new entrance, boot room and utility. To the rear, the extension opens the kitchen and dining space to the garden through a large pivot door and fully opening oriel-style window seat, with a timber brise-soleil defining the threshold between inside and outside.

A measured set of interventions, focused on improving space, light and everyday function while carefully controlling mass, proportion and visual impact.

Following a testimonial from the Head of Community & Partnership at Broxbourne Big Local, we are also very grateful to receive this testimonial from the Board of Trustees, reflecting on our work at Wormley Community Centre.

It has been a privilege to support the project from early strategic and funding stages through to procurement, detailed design and delivery of Phase 1A. A meaningful project to be involved in, and great to see the positive impact the completed works are already having on the community.

Thank you to the trustees for their trust, collaboration and kind words.

Two concept images from our latest project, a wrap around extension and dormer loft conversion to a 1970s bungalow.

These are the clients preferred option’s, we will now refine and combine the strongest elements into a single resolved scheme as we move towards a planning submission.

More to follow as the design develops.

A series of concept images shows how the sensory pod within our proposed community hub project is formed from a set of movable walls.

When stacked back, the walls sit neatly within the wider space. When pulled out, they create an enclosed sensory pod with integrated banquette seating, acoustic wall panels, soft lighting and high level openings that allow diffused natural light to filter in while maintaining a calm, sheltered atmosphere.

The aim is to create a flexible quiet space that offers retreat, comfort and a sense of enclosure when needed, while remaining adaptable to the changing needs of the community hub.

Our submission for Antepavilion 2026. Although unsuccessful this year, I had great fun working on this one with @create_space_yoga - our first collaboration and I look forward to many more.

Our proposal, Sancta Sanctorum, reimagined the innermost sacred space of a temple as a quiet act of rebellion: a place to pause, reflect and reconnect in a world that constantly urges us forward. Inspired by sacred architecture and natural skylight formations, the pavilion was conceived as a domed sanctuary where light, air and movement make the invisible perceptible, drawing attention back to our surroundings, the universe and ourselves.

The brief this year looks forward to a post AI era where craftsmanship finds a bigger place in the skill set of architects and re-use, with proposals being conceived as fully reclaimed - making optimum use of Antepavillions large array of surplus or reclaimed materials.

Really pleased to receive this lovely testimonial following completion of Phase 1A at Wormley Community Centre, and to see the project already making a positive difference for the centre and the wider community.

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL:

Broxbourne Big Local: Zoe Edwards - Head of Community & Partnership

“We appointed Cassell Architects to work with us on the development of our community centre, and the experience has been very positive throughout. Harry, Director of the practice, has been consistently available to answer our questions and to explain complex matters in clear, accessible terms.

I have been particularly impressed with his ability to keep our community’s needs and aspirations at the heart of every stage of the project. He has guided us through challenging procurement and compliance processes with patience and expertise, making what could have been overwhelming feel manageable.

Harry’s proactive approach gave us confidence that any challenges would be addressed promptly, all while keeping the project on track to meet our funders’ tight deadlines. We are thrilled to see the first stage of the project completed and are already witnessing the positive impact it is having on the Community Centre and the wider community it serves.”

Concept studies for a new showroom fit-out, exploring the hierarchy of spatial anchors, circulation and display frameworks that shape the spatial arrangement. Each option tests how product display, seating and circulation can be organised to create a calm and legible environment for interaction, presentation and conversation.

The bar fit-out at Wormley Community Centre is nearing completion. Great to see the green blue concave tiled bar front now installed, echoing the external cladding of the new extension and creating a consistent visual language from outside to in.

Refining the design and materiality of our mixed use deep retrofit scheme as we move toward planning submission. The programme brings together a new community hub for a vital local charity at ground floor level with residential duplexes above. The proposal takes a heritage sensitive approach, using natural, low maintenance materials and carefully considered detailing, crafted to sit comfortably within its mews context.

Twenty eight years ago my father embarked on a deep retrofit of a disused, single-storey shop on the Isle of Wight, formerly known as “Bow Windows” for its prominent bow fronts. Over the years he transformed it into our family beach house, adding a second storey beneath a new pitched roof, I even helped pull the first truss into place aged 13. Long before circularity was mainstream, he envisioned a home built from reclaimed materials locally sourced from a nearby large Victorian house called Brambles which was being demolished: the roof tiles, joists, floorboards, internal doors and even the staircase all salvaged and given a new lease of life.

The next chapter in the buildings evolution is a new extension, adding a multigenerational layer to its story. The preferred concept option developed from exploration of a number of approaches references the site’s history: a flat roofed volume recalling the former single storey shop; while sandy beach-stone walls have a playful dialogue with the existing sandstone façade; and a cast concrete fascia echos the former robust lintels that once framed the Bow Windows shopfront. Internally a feature circular rooflight draws daylight from above, nodding to the existing gable porthole and the home’s nautical setting.

The scheme will now be developed ready for a pre-application submission in due course.
