Twenty-eight years ago my father embarked on a deep retrofit of a disused, single-storey shop on the Isle of Wight - formerly known as “Bow Windows” for its prominent bow fronts. Over the years he transformed it into our family beach house, adding a second storey beneath a new pitched roof, I even helped pull the first truss into place aged 13. Long before circularity was mainstream, he envisioned a home built from reclaimed materials locally sourced from a nearby large Victorian house called Brambles which was being demolished: the roof tiles, joists, floorboards, internal doors and even the staircase all salvaged and given a new lease of life.

The next chapter in the buildings evolution is a new extension, adding a multigenerational layer to its story. The preferred concept option developed from exploration of a number of approaches references the site’s history: a flat-roofed volume recalling the former single storey shop; while sandy beach-stone walls have a playful dialogue with the existing sandstone façade; and a cast-concrete fascia echos the former robust lintels that once framed the Bow Windows shopfront. Internally a feature circular rooflight draws daylight from above, nodding to the existing gable porthole and the home’s nautical setting.

The scheme will now be developed ready for a pre-application submission in due course.

While the space allocated for the commercial cafe kitchen has been fitted out for its temporary use between phases as a Nursery. Adaptability is crucial when navigating an ambitious phased community led project. Each phase of our Wormley Community Centre Project has been designed with flexibility in mind, ensuring spaces can adapt with changing needs to allow for continued operation with minimal impact throughout the construction periods. Phase 1A has been built to serve a dual purpose, all services and ducting are in place ready to accommodate a full scale commercial café kitchen, which will be installed in future phase 1B. The same space has also been designed to temporarily accommodate a new nursery with dedicated new entrance and outdoor play area.
